Name badges with QR codes, from a CSV

Paste your attendee list, pick 4 × 3 or 4 × 6 inch badges and download a PDF to print. Names on the front, your event's short link on the back of every badge, and each attendee's own link on the front if they gave one, sized so it scans from half a metre. The list stays in your browser.

1. The event

Use a short link you can change later: the agenda before the event, slides and recordings after. No link yet? Make one free and see opens by day and device.

2. The attendees

Columns: name, company, link (optional), in that order, or with a header row: name or first name + last name, company, role or ticket, link. Commas, semicolons or tabs; a spreadsheet's “Save as CSV” works. Up to 500 badges. 5 badges read (header row found).

3. Badge and paper

“Reads from” is how close a phone must come to see 3 camera pixels a square, the level a badge turned 35-50° away still decoded at in our test. Green is 45 cm or more (a lean forward at a stand), amber 30-45 cm, red closer. A long link makes small squares: put the attendee's page behind a short link instead.

Before you print the lot

  • One link on the back, the same for everyone. Point it at the agenda now and at the slides and recordings when it's over; badges turn up in coat pockets for weeks.
  • No vCards or registration numbers on the front. Whatever is in the code is in every photo of the badge. An attendee's own link is their choice; ask for it at registration.
  • Print at 100%. “Fit to page” shrinks the codes and the badges stop matching the stock. Check one sheet against your inserts first.
  • Double-sided sheets: flip on the long edge. Hold the first sheet to the light: the cutting lines on both sides should meet.

What a badge code should hold, our decode test of tilted badges and what lead scanning costs: a QR code on a conference badge. Want a contact page to put behind your own badge link? Make one free.
